Gov’t Mule had an eventful weekend on the road, during which they both collaborated with their tourmate Joe Bonamassa and honored Jerry Garcia on his birthday.
On Friday, July 31, Gov’t Mule’s joint run with Bonamassa landed at Bangor, ME’s Maine Savings Amphitheater at Bangor Waterfront. Like he did on the tour’s opening night in Virginia on Wednesday, Bonamassa emerged during Gov’t Mule’s first set for a tune from the Allman Brothers Band songbook, this time appearing on “Dreams.” Haynes returned the favor during Bonamassa’s performance as well, slipping on stage for Billy Cobham’s “Stratus” for the second show in a row.
The next night, the two acts co-headlined an evening at Gilford, NH’s Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook. With the show falling on August 1, Garcia’s birthday, Gov’t Mule put together a multi-song tribute to the Grateful Dead guitarist partway through their concert. The sequence kicked off with “Patchwork Quilt,” the original Garcia tribute Haynes recorded with Phil Lesh & Friends for 2002’s There & Back Again album. Immediately after, Haynes pulled out Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar and used it on two classic Dead songs, “Dark Star”—the first time he has played the number with Gov’t Mule since August 9, 2022—and “Fire on the Mountain,” which the Mule had not played since February 17, 2024. (Earlier in the night, the Mule also revived “Steppin’ Lightly” for the first time since May 18, 2023.) Bonamassa and his B3 organ player Lachy Doley then emerged for Ann Peebles’ “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home Tonight.” For the third show in a row, Haynes circled back to the stage later on during Bonamassa’s portion of the show as well, once again sitting in on “Stratus.”
Then, last night, Mule snuck in a two-set show at Williamsport, PA’s Journey Bank Community Arts Center during an off-night from their current outing with Bonamassa. However, the Mule kept the surprised coming and, at the start of their second set, they kicked things off by busting out “Child of the Earth,” from 2006’s High & Mighty album, for the first time since October 12, 2022.
Gov’t Mule will perform next at Lewiston, NY’s Artpark Amphitheater on August 6, sharing the bill with JJ Grey & Mofro. Their tour with Bonamassa picks back up at Baltimore, MD’s Pier Six Pavillion on August 8.
