Gov’t Mule’s Kicking in Your Stall Tour traveled to Atlantic City last night and the band continues its steady run of memorable performances. The Tropicana Atlantic City was the locale as the group delivered a fitting cover it last performed 18 years earlier.
The evening opened with “Mr. High And Mighty,” the title track to the group’s 2006 album, which the Mule had previously played on 5/18/2023. The first set also included notable takes on fan-favorites “32-20 Blues,” “Beautifully Broken” and “I’m A Ram.”
When the group emerged for the second half of the evening, it began with an even deeper cut, offering a location-appropriate take on Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.” This is only the second time that the group has taken a swing at the tune. Back on 7/25/08 at the Atlantic City House of Blues the group opened its encore with a version of the song that included the first verse and then some extemporized moments. On Friday evening, “Funny Little Tragedy” then followed with a “Message In A Bottle” tease, while “Unring The Bell” included a “Shakedown Street” tease fitting for the Days Between. The encore of Tom Waits’ “Going Out West” also quoted many other tunes, including “I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction),” “Killing In The Name Of,” “Les Brers In A Minor” and “When the Saints Go Marching.”
As previously reported, on Thursday, Gov’t Mule delivered a cover of Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey,” with JJ Grey & Mofro. A video of that performance appears below:
