Enrico Rava/Joe Lovano: Roma

The jazz tradition, invention and sheer beauty packed into trumpeter Enrico Rava and tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano’s Roma (ECM)—which documents a 2018 show in the Italian capitol with Giovanni Guidi (piano), Dezron Douglas (bass) and Gerald Cleaver (drums)—is stunning. Roma sparkles with conversational instrumental repartee, hits a nasty gut-bucket crescendo on Lovano’s bluesy “Fort Worth,” and wraps up with an extended ramble through Lovano’s “Drum Song,” Coltrane’s “Spiritual,” and Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow.”
