The Tedeschi Trucks Band have resumed its extensive summer tour and is now making its way across the Golden State. On Wednesday the group appeared at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Last night, TTB was at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Then, it's on to Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego on Sunday, followed by an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday.
The Berkeley show opened with three songs from the group’s new album Future Soul: “Crazy Cryin’” “I Got You” and “What in the World.” The extended set also offered a memorable version of “Let Me Get By,” which was preceded by a jam that featured saxophone player Kebbi Williams and drummers Issac Eady and Tyler Greenwell. Given the Bay Area locale, a later version of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” also was fitting, as paired with John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery.” Midway through the set, Alam Khan, Head of Indian Classical Instrumental Studies at the Ali Akbar College of Music, joined in on sarod for a soaring take on the TTB original “Hold That Line,” which appears on I Am The Moon: II. The group had last performed the tune on 11/15/24. Lukas Nelson opened the show with his band and later guested on Leon Russell’s “A Song For You.”
Nelson also joined in last night during the encore in Santa Barbara. This marked the first occasion in which he’s brought out some of his bandmates as well, with Dakota Holden (guitar) and Eli Salus-Kleiner (keys) appearing for the encore, which was Neil Young’s “Helpless” followed by “Space Captain,” the Matthew Moore composition that Joe Cocker made his own during the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. The evening also included a version of The Rolling Stones’ “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker).” Mike Mattison sang lead on the song, which TTB had previously played on 9/29/23.
